The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by Methodist preacher William Booth in East London. It was a response to poverty in the poorest parts of the city. The work was originally known as "The Christian Mission".
In Czechoslovakia, The Salvation Army began its work in 1919 at the invitation of then-President T. G. Masaryk. In 1928, the first corps was established in Bratislava.
