HISTORY

GLOBAL CONTEXT

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by Methodist preacher William Booth in East London. It was a response to poverty in the poorest parts of the city. The work was originally known as "The Christian Mission".

CZECHIA AND SLOVAKIA

In Czechoslovakia, The Salvation Army began its work in 1919 at the invitation of then-President T. G. Masaryk. In 1928, the first corps was established in Bratislava.

Founding in Great Britain

William Booth founds The Christian Mission in East London, which later changes to The Salvation Army.

1919

Arrival in Czechoslovakia

Beginning of operations in the CSR at the personal invitation of President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk.

1950

Ban on Activities

The communist regime succeeded in forcibly ending all Salvation Army activities in Czechoslovakia.

1990

Return and Renewal

President Václav Havel invites The Salvation Army back. Resumption of activities in the CSFR.

2015

Officially in Slovakia

Official launch of independent work and registration of The Salvation Army in Slovakia.
